Business website design

Websites for trades, workshops, practices and local specialists — built to turn up in the search and then give people a reason to ring.

Websites for businesses that win work by being found

Most of my clients aren't selling online. They're a trade, a workshop, a practice or a specialist, and their website has one commercial job: turn up when somebody local searches for what they do, and give that person a reason to ring rather than click back.

Which means the build is only half the work. The other half is structure, content and local SEO — a page for each service, the towns you cover, the proof that you're any good, and a phone number that never leaves the screen.

Business websites I've designed and built

Marine covers, electrical contracting, ponds and landscaping, golf coaching, architectural design, locksmiths, bridal, private hire and events.

Advanced Covers marine covers website
HTMLRescueSecurity

Advanced Covers

Bespoke marine covers, sprayhoods and frames, hand-made in Southampton. Their Joomla site was hacked, stuffed with spam and suspended by the host. I rebuilt it from a clean backup as a static site that keeps the original look and feel — but with no CMS and no database, so there is nothing left to break into.

Pondaqs ponds, aquariums and landscaping website
WebsiteLocal SEO

Pondaqs

Ponds, aquariums and light landscaping across Totton, Southampton and the wider Hampshire area. Three quite different services — pond building, fish tanks and patios, decking and rockeries — given a section each, so people searching for any one of them land on the right page rather than a general homepage.

Danny Coombs Golf Academy website

Danny Coombs Golf Academy

A PGA professional coaching at Hamptworth Golf & Country Club on the edge of the New Forest. Identity, site and booking journey designed together — one-to-one lessons, junior and ladies' coaching and monthly memberships, all bookable and payable online.

Orange Key Design Studios website
HTMLLocal SEOProjects & blog

Orange Key Design Studios

An architectural design practice in Hungerford working across Berkshire and Oxfordshire. A clean, hand-coded site with a projects gallery and blog running on my own plugin, plus town-level pages and cross-linking so the practice is found for design, planning and building-regulation drawing searches across the three counties.

Romsey Bridal Boutique website
WordPressSEOGoogle Ads

Romsey Bridal Boutique

An award-winning wedding-dress boutique that already had a look they loved. Rather than start again I kept the design, tightened the layout and rewrote the content — then spent roughly nine-tenths of the job under the bonnet, rebuilding the site's structure and internal linking so it surfaces for the designer and appointment searches brides actually make. I run their Google Ads too.

Solent Locksmiths website
HTMLLocal SEOGoogle Ads

Solent Locksmiths

Two stores and a 24/7 emergency line. A hand-coded static site built for instant loading on mobile, with local SEO and a Google Ads account rebuilt around working call and form conversion tracking.

Paragon Taxis website and booking system
WordPressBespoke softwareBooking systemStripe

Paragon Taxis

Cruise, airport and private day-tour transfers for a Southampton firm running since the mid-eighties. The website sits on a booking platform built from scratch: customers pick a transfer or a tour and are only offered vehicles that fit their passengers and luggage, the office confirms and takes payment through Stripe, invoices generate as PDFs, and every job reaches the driver's calendar with a full run sheet.

Nostalgic DJ website
HTMLVideoLead generation

Nostalgic DJ

Mobile DJs and event entertainment. A fast static rebuild with video, galleries, an online brochure and a quote flow designed to convert enquiries into bookings. I DJ'd in clubs for years myself, so the brief needed no translating — I knew what the bookers ask and what actually wins the date.

What a business website needs to get right

  • A page per service — not one "Services" page listing nine things. Each job someone searches for deserves somewhere to land
  • The towns you cover — written into the site properly, not stuffed into a footer list, and backed by a Google Business Profile that matches
  • Proof, above the fold — your real Google rating, your accreditations, how long you've been trading. Visible, not buried in a widget
  • An obvious next step — tap-to-call on mobile, a short form that asks the right questions, and no contact page dead ends
  • Speed — most of these sites are hand-coded and load in milliseconds, because a tradesperson's customer is usually on a phone and in a hurry
  • Security that lasts — static builds with no CMS and no database, so there is nothing to hack and nothing to patch
  • Structured data — LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ markup so search engines understand the business, not just the words

Rescues and rebuilds

A fair share of this list started as an emergency. Advanced Covers was hacked, filled with spam and suspended by the host — rebuilt from a clean backup as a static site that looks like the original and has nothing left to break into. Others were end-of-life Joomla, abandoned by a previous developer, or simply so slow they were losing people before the page drew.

In every case the old URLs are mapped and redirected, so the rankings survive the move rather than starting again from nothing. Rescued sites go onto managed UK hosting, and most carry on with SEO afterwards.

Frequently asked

How many pages does a small business website need?
Fewer than people fear, but more than one. As a rule: a home page, a page for each service you actually want enquiries for, an about page that proves you're real, and a contact page. If you cover several towns and they matter commercially, they may earn pages too — but only if there's something genuine to say about each.
Do I need WordPress?
Often not. If nobody is going to write blog posts, a hand-coded static site is faster, cheaper to host and can't be hacked, because there's no CMS or database there to attack. If you do want to publish regularly, WordPress set up lean is the right answer. I build both and will tell you honestly which one your business needs.
My site was hacked. Can it be rescued?
Yes, and it's a job I do regularly. The site gets rebuilt from a verified-clean backup — not from the compromised files — usually as a static site so the entry route is closed for good, with every old URL redirected so your search rankings come through intact.
Will my new site rank better than the old one?
That's the intention, and it's measured rather than claimed. The structure, content and internal linking are built around what people actually search for, positions are tracked before and after, and you get told what moved. One site I took on placed nowhere at all for its twelve main search terms; eleven of them are now on page one.
Do you look after the site afterwards?
Yes. Most clients here stay on managed UK hosting with backups, SSL and updates handled, and a good number carry on with ongoing SEO or Google Ads. You deal with me either way — there's no support queue.
